Why people search “image under 100 KB”

100 KB is not for every hero
A crisp 180 KB AVIF hero can beat a crushed 95 KB file on LCP and on brand. Use 100 KB for repeated content images, cards, and thumbnails. For product shots and Open Graph, the 200 KB page is usually kinder.
Honest limits
Size-budget encoding runs on JPEG, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, and PNG (binary-search palette colors with Reduce palette, then Oxipng). Best for logos and flat graphics; photos usually fit better as WebP or AVIF.
Size-budget encoding skips QOI — use quality and resize instead.
GIF uses the first frame only — animation is not encoded. TIFF uses the first page only.
